Welcome to the Cecchetti Society Trust Newsletter

Trustees hope that many of our readers and supporters can join us for our Vocational Classical Ballet Awards on Sunday 24th November 2024 at Elmhurst Ballet School, Birmingham. The Awards are open to the public and further event information and ticket booking details are given below.

The Trust is also pleased to be supporting two other upcoming events in 2024 which offer young dancers the opportunity to gain performance experience in the context of a friendly competition - the Mabel Ryan Awards and the Malta Awards.

Lastly, friends, colleagues and the wider ballet community are mourning the passing of Richard Glasstone MBE, whilst reflecting on his life’s work that contributed so much to our understanding of Cecchetti.

Vocational Awards 2024/25

Sunday 24th November 2024 - 12.00 - 17.15
Elmhurst Ballet School, 249 Bristol Rd, Birmingham B5 7UH

The Cecchetti Society Trust is delighted that talented young dancers will participate in the Vocational Classical Ballet Awards in Birmingham. The Awards incorporate the Fewster Cecchetti Scholarship (FCS) , the Barbara Geoghegan Award (BGA) and the Cyril Beaumont Scholarship (CBS). All competitors will participate in an adjudicated ballet class onstage containing unset work and specified traditional Cecchetti exercises. Those entered for the Barbara Geoghegan Award and Cyril Beaumont Scholarship will also perform a solo classical variation.

The Awards Adjudicators are Sara Gallie, former Soloist of the Royal Ballet and David Yow, former Principal of Birmingham Royal Ballet.

The event is open to a public audience and tickets are priced at £15.00 for Adults and £8.00 for Students and those aged 16 years and under. Cecchetti Classical Ballet Scholars
Perform at ISTD Congress

The Cecchetti Classical Ballet Scholars were invited to represent the ISTD Cecchetti Faculty at the ISTD Congress on 2nd November 2024 at Queen Anne’s School, Berkshire. The Congress day was part of the ISTD’s 120th Anniversary Celebrations. The senior Scholars performed a lovely demonstration of excerpts from the Grade 6 to Advanced 2 Cecchetti syllabus work. The work was skillfully arranged by Scholars staff, Gillian Toogood and Judith Wilson.

The Trust is proud to continue to support the Cecchetti Classical Ballet Scholarship scheme.

Teachers Study Bursaries 2025

The Cecchetti Society Trust provides a number of bursaries to support teachers in their study of Cecchetti.  To assist with forward planning, the Trust is pleased to advise that applications for CST Teachers Study Bursaries 2025 (for study in the period January 2025 - December 2025) will open next month.

Free Teachers Weekend
8th & 9th February 2025
KS Dance, Warrington

This short but intensive course is designed to focus on basic teaching methodology and how these build into the profession via vocational work. It will cover issues that affect all dance teachers including how to work with students who have bio mechanical challenges such as hyper extensions, scoliosis etc, as well as how to approach the teaching of pointe work and the teaching of boys. This course is designed to be practical as well as to encourage a healthy dialogue about current techniques and demands of the industry.

Kate Simmons, Director of KS Dance and Gillian Hurst, Deputy Principal of KS Dance, are donating their time for FREE to encourage as many people as possible to come along and take part, and all sessions will be accompanied by experienced pianists.
